Who We Are

We are a team of physicians and nurses especially trained in the area of sexuality and bladder care following traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. Many of the principles of changes to one's physiology and treatment options apply to persons with other spinal cord or neurological impairment (whether they are born that way or acquired the disability through a medical condition, like multiple sclerosis for example). We are either physicians ( Sexual Medicine Specialist or Urologist) or specialized nurses trained in all aspects of sexual rehabilitation called Sexual Health Clinicians. We work out of Vancouver , British Columbia in a hospital clinic and/or academic setting, but also consult by phone to many other services in the provinces.

The two physicians involved are Dr. Stacy Elliott ( Sexual Medicine Specialist) and Dr. Mark Nigro (Urologist), who are both Co-directors of the Vancouver Sperm Retrieval Clinic and see sexual dysfunction and urological issues respectively, and who are both Clinical Associate Professors within their respective Departments at UBC. Within the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre (VH&HSC) there is also a Sexual Health Department with 6 Sexual Health Clinicians who work to provide inpatient and outpatient services as well as many consultative services to other health care professionals. The Sexual Health Service delivery model of care has been emulated in other centers in North America.

At Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre there is also a Sexual Health Service with Sexual Health Clinicians (a registered nurse who has specialized knowledge and expertise in the area of human sexuality and disability) who see inpatients and outpatients with physical disability and also provide education to health care professionals. The Sexual Health model of service delivery has been singled out as one of the most effective and comprehensive sexual rehabilitation programs in North America.

Where We Are

This Website is being provided in order to disseminate knowledge around sexual changes following spinal cord impairment or traumatic brain injury, and to direct the consumer or other interested parties to services that can be provided, and as well provide an opportunity to ask questions on the Bulletin Board (coming soon!) or more privately by email .
